What We Expect From CARDANO-After Basho Upgrade

The Cardano Roadmap outlines five distinct stages of development; however, what will the Cardano Basho upgrade bring?

Following the Alonzo hard fork in mid-September, Cardano took its next steps into the Goguen era, including the implementation of smart contract functionality. Cardano will enter the Basho era after the Goguen era.

While several upgrades are still on the way in the Goguen era, here's what to expect from Cardano Basho.

What Exactly Is Cardano Basho?

Cardano Basho will concentrate on scaling the Cardano network in order to improve performance. It was named after Japanese poet Matsuo Bash, who was famous for developing haikus during the Edo period.

According to the Cardano Roadmap, the Basho era of Cardano is an era of optimization, improving the network's scalability and interoperability.

To achieve this scaling, Basho will add sidechains to the Cardano blockchain, allowing these new chains to relieve pressure on the main chain. This is similar to the upcoming sharding upgrade in Ethereum 2.0. These sidechains can also be used to test features, lowering the risk of doing so on the main chain.

Users will also be able to use an account model for transactions, according to Basho. Cardano currently only uses UTXO, but users will be able to switch between models in the Basho era.

Of course, the Basho upgrade is still subject to change, so any new features will be added as they are announced.

Cardano Basho's Publication Date

Cardano Basho does not yet have an official release date because the Goguen era is still in its early stages. We do know, however, that work on Cardano scaling has already begun, thanks to the Alonzo hard fork.

Hydra Layer-2 Solution

Hydra is IOHK's layer-2 solution for increasing Cardano scaling by processing transactions off-chain. This should reduce the load on the main blockchain even further while increasing the number of transactions per second.

According to a recent IOHK blog post, progress on Hydra will "greatly depend on the results of our research and experimentation, as well as feedback from the developer community" over the next 6-12 months.According to IOHK's Charles Hoskinson, the Cardano Summit 2021 will include Hyrdra in some form.
